Following a number of well-publicised incidents involving reversing accidents in the trucking industry, our SPS Safety Committee took proactive measures to enhance the safety features of our street sweeper and road sweeper fleet. Whether operating in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, or across regional Australia, the statistics on reversing accidents in heavy vehicles were concerning, and we were determined to find a solution that would protect both our operators and the public during pavement cleaning operations.

Our Solution: Auto Brake Technology

In response to this challenge, we introduced the Auto Reverse Braking Radar System across our fleet. This innovative system provides an additional layer of safety with features including:

• Advanced Radar Sensors that detect obstacles within a defined perimeter
• Automatic Braking that prevents the truck from reversing when obstacles are detected
• Mandatory Visual Inspection required by operators before overriding the system
• Override Button that can only be activated after proper safety checks

When the Radar Sensor detects an obstacle within range, the Autobrake activates immediately, preventing the truck from reversing. The operator must then perform a visual inspection before they can activate the Override button to release the brake. This systematic approach significantly increases operational safety, protecting the public from potential injuries and avoiding damage to property and equipment.
